Blog Post 3!
When it comes to ELA standards, I feel like I still have a lot to learn and improve when it comes to being able to teach my students. As of right now, I feel like I am prepared enough to teach them about "Vocabulary: Use Context Clues". In high school, because I am a fluent Spanish speaker, I would help and tutor other students for their Spanish classes. Spanish tends to have a lot of similar words or even sometimes use the same words for different definitions so its super important to understand how to use and understand certain words in the context they are given. But I think that "Using Digital Media" needs more practice on my part. It's just hard sometimes incorporating digital media in some presentations and projects that I have to complete.
As of right now, I really like the idea of doing online discussion boards in the classroom and also online learning activities. I have taken three online courses here at FSU and I've always been a fan of discussion boards. It's a nicer way to review the material in class and also get feedback from your fellow students. As for online learning activities, I plan on teaching Spanish to middle schoolers (hopefully) and I think online activities would be more helpful because it gives students a chance to practice the language and not feel ashamed or embarrassed if they say the wrong thing. By letting them get more comfortable with the language, they will feel more comfortable in the classroom. To teach middle schoolers digital citizenship, I would focus on what is appropriate for their age group to posting and viewing online. At this age, they are beginning to get smart phones, open social media accounts, and so on. So its important they know how to be respectful and also respect themselves.
I liked being able to get comfortable with Word and learning how to make a newsletter. I made one for my ideal class audience, 8th grade Spanish. Parents of middle schoolers don't need too much information I personally believe because we should be prepping them to become more independent as they are about to head off into middle school. I think it still is a good idea to send home information to those parents that aren't constantly talking to their student's teachers.
I think incorporating online discussions is a great idea, especially in a language class. What platform, software, or app would you use to host/run the online discussion?
